Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom's Kokoshnik Tiara

Creation: This tiara was commissioned by the Marchioness of Salisbury and the Marchioness of Ailesbury from Garrard in 1888 using money from the 365 peeresses of the United Kingdom. It can be worn as a necklace and in 1895 a new frame was made for the tiara.

  1. There are a number of photographs of this piece with a colored stone at the bottom of the center vertical element. This stone seems to have been removed when the new frame was made. Has anyone any detail on the why and wherefore?
